Devotional: Walk in the Light
Share
Jesus said, “If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” — John 11:9–10
Years ago, I visited a remote area where there was no electricity. Late that night, I stepped outside and found myself surrounded by an almost tangible darkness. There were no streetlights, no porch lights, and no glow from nearby buildings, only a thick, impenetrable darkness. I could barely see where I was stepping. As I was writing this devotional, I remembered that experience, and it gave me a greater appreciation for Jesus' statement in our anchor scripture.
After receiving news about His friend Lazarus' illness, Jesus decided to continue the work the Father had given Him and eventually return to Judea, where Lazarus lived in nearby Bethany. The disciples expressed concern because the Jews had recently sought to stone Him. Yet Jesus responded with the words in our anchor scripture, meaning that His appointed time had not yet come, and therefore He was not afraid of any danger before Him.
In a broader sense, Jesus was also teaching His disciples an important spiritual truth: those who walk in the light do not need to fear stumbling (John 8:12). As long as we walk in His light and follow His Word, we need not live in fear of the enemy or the uncertainties that surround us.
Scripture describes God's Word as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105), and declares that the entrance of His Word gives light (Psalm 119:130). This means that the Word illuminates our path and helps us discern God's mind concerning the decisions we face: where to go, which opportunities to pursue, which ones to decline, whom to trust, and when to exercise caution. A person who follows only the desires of the heart and relies solely on human reasoning rather than seeking God's will (which is found in His Word) can easily fall into temptation and error. Such a person walks in obscurity and stumbles because the light of God's Word is not guiding their path.
As you read this devotional, be encouraged to develop the habit of studying God's Word daily. The understanding and revelation that come from Scripture will guide you in every area of life. Having the Word of God dwelling richly within you will help you resist sin, bring peace to your heart and mind, and provide wisdom for life's challenges. In God's Word, we find direction, strength, and answers, for without the Word nothing was made that was made.
Prayer
Father, thank You for Your Word, which is a light to my path and a guide for my life. Help me to walk in Your light daily and to seek Your will above my own understanding. Let Your Word dwell richly in me, directing my steps and keeping me from stumbling. In Jesus' name, Amen.
