Devotional: A Divine Encounter

Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life". - John 4:13-14

Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at a well and offers her living water that will never run dry. Before this encounter, Jesus had told His disciples that they were going to Galilee, but they had to pass through Samaria. Although this was not the usual route for many Jews, Jesus went through Samaria, and in the end, we can say that He made room in His journey to offer this woman a precious gift: the gift of salvation.

After hearing Jesus speak about her past and present mistakes, the woman realized she was not speaking to an ordinary man. The man knew of her mistakes but still offered to give her something precious, the gift of eternal life. With joy, the woman leaves her water jar and goes to tell the people about the man she has met, who told her everything she had ever done. Her actions represent a life that has encountered the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ, a life whose eyes have been opened to the truth.

The reason why the woman went to the well was to fetch water, probably for cooking, cleaning, or other household needs. But she found something far more valuable: the gift of salvation, which leads to eternal life. When she received this gift from Jesus, she could not contain her joy. She left her water jar and went to share the good news with her community, and the people also came to Jesus and received His message of salvation. When we encounter Jesus and discover who He truly is, our priorities change, and nothing else matters more than sharing the good news with others.

Another part of the story that intrigues me is how Jesus chose a well as the setting for this conversation about living water. It was the perfect place to illustrate the difference between what gives temporary satisfaction and what offers eternal life. The water from the well could refresh the body, but the thirst would eventually return. However, the living water Jesus offers satisfies a deeper thirst, one that physical water cannot quench. The water in the well would eventually be used up (run dry), but the living water Jesus gives leads to eternal life.

Jesus is offering His living water to us today. Are you ready to receive it?

Remember, you cannot continue to hold on to the water jar and fully embrace the living water Jesus offers. You must be willing to lay down whatever is holding you back and open your heart to receive Him. When you do, you will discover the joy this woman experienced, along with the freedom and peace that come from knowing Jesus.

He knows your past and your present struggles, yet He still offers you the gift of salvation. Your past mistakes do not disqualify you from receiving His grace. All you need to do is come to Him and receive the living water He freely offers.
